South Communities Training

Following the training and qualification of the Learning Support Teacher at Marine Primary School as a mediator of the Basic Concepts Programme (BCP), significant improvements were observed in the functioning and learning outcomes of the learners in her groups. These positive results generated strong interest among the remaining Foundation Phase teachers at the school. As a result, they attended the Basic Concepts Symposium in 2025 and requested formal training in the programme.

Teachers from Pauli Pre-Primary School also participated in the symposium and recognised the potential of the programme to support learners in the Early Childhood Development (ECD) phase.

These two schools will undertake training together as part of the South Communities Training Programme.

The primary objective of this initiative is to introduce structured and targeted BCP interventions in schools serving the Metro South Communities.

Teacher-mediators at these sites will not only deliver high-quality, focused, short-term interventions to learners, but will also be responsible for establishing a sustainable and ongoing intervention framework within their schools.

As designated Focus Schools, they will receive enhanced support from the Basic Concepts Foundation, including advanced training, learner progress tracking, feedback, and ongoing monitoring and evaluation.

The BCP provides "tools" for higher-level learning.

Ek waardeer alles wat Dr Louis ons geleer het. Daar is soveel dinge wat ek nie geweet het nie, bv. hoe om ons kinders te help leer. You are a star, thank you for your time.

Pixley Kaseme: Training Sessions 1+2

Thank you for introducing me to this "life skill". It is wonderful that there is also an online, interactive, support system with resources available.

Metro Central Training: Western Cape Education Department (October, 2015)

I have learned so much through the Kwena Basic Education Trust and for that I would like to take this opportunity to say: thank you.

Kwena Basin Education Trust: Project Visit, May 2016

I had an idea what the course would be like, but it was much more than what I had expected.

Metro Central Training: WCED (February, 2015)

The emphasis on language throughout the programme helps to develop learners' understanding of concepts and expand their vocabulary. The BCP stops learners from guessing, it gives them more structure and develops their cognitive functioning.
