BCP FOCUS SCHOOLS IN SOUTH AFRICA

The principal and management team at Edendale Primary have found that language development is a key challenge for learners at their school and recognised the significant impact the Basic Concepts Programme (BCP) was having at schools in the surrounding area.

They requested training for all 8 of the Foundation Phase teachers, as well as the Learning Support Teacher of the school.

The two first training sessions (Colour and Shape) have already been completed.

Training is being facilitated by master mediator, Gill Brand.

The BCP has been formally added to the Foundation Phase timetables three times a week and the Basic Concepts Foundation provides classroom support and guidance in between trainng sessions.

The course was very helpful to me as a teacher, excellent and exciting, because it opened my mind … how to integrate basic concept in all learning areas. It also showed that children should not be limited and their understanding should be developed step-by-step.

I am extremely grateful for being exposed to this programme … I'm always worried about those learners who are not progressing. The programme can support these learners in order to lay the foundation for academic progress. Practically my whole class needs this Foundation!!! The Basic Concepts Programme is basically the same as Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development. It is a way of teaching… it gives individuals a way to structure their thinking and reasoning.
