The training session received an excellent overall rating of 4.8 out of 5, with 80% of participants awarding the session the highest possible score.
Main Themes from Teachers' about Position:
1. Understanding and Teaching POSITION Concepts
Teachers developed a clearer understanding of key position concepts such as top, middle, bottom, left, right, direction and perspective.
2. Effective Use of the Position Board
The most dominant theme was learning how to use the Position Board effectively to demonstrate, explain and expand position concepts with learners.
3. Importance of Clear Mediation and Instructions
Many teachers highlighted the need to give specific, detailed and carefully mediated instructions when teaching position concepts.
4. Planning and Structured Teaching Using the Steps
Teachers referred frequently to planning sessions, using the Basic Concepts steps, and structuring sessions more systematically.
5. Perspective Taking and Spatial Understanding
Teachers gained insight into how position can change depending on perspective and how learners interpret spatial relationships differently.
6. Understanding the Principles and “Laws” of the BCP
Several comments reflected increased awareness of the “10 laws” or guiding principles of the Basic Concepts Programme and the do’s and don’ts of implementation.
7. Confidence in Practical Classroom Implementation
Teachers expressed greater confidence in demonstrating position concepts and using appropriate materials to support learner understanding.
Teacher Comments
Teachers described the POSITION training as highly engaging, practical and enlightening, with many reporting increased confidence in mediating position concepts and using the Position Board effectively in the classroom.
Participants particularly valued the interactive facilitation style, clear demonstrations and the programme’s relevance to Foundation Phase learning.
“The workshop was very informative and engaging — I now understand how to unpack and teach POSITION concepts clearly, and I feel much more confident implementing the programme with my learners.”
