The training session received an excellent overall rating of 4.91 out of 5, with 94% of participants awarding the session the highest possible score.
Main themes from the Letter training
The participant responses cluster around four main take-aways:

Letter construction and formation – Learning how to build, construct and form letters, including using sticks, dots and other materials, while understanding the structure, size and positioning of letters.

Letter names and sounds – Developing an understanding of letter recognition, letter names and letter sounds, including the distinction between uppercase and lowercase letters and the idea of the letter’s “secret sound.”

Blending and word building – Learning how to blend sounds and construct words, with attention to sequencing, structure and positioning.

Mediation and teaching methodology – Learning how to introduce letters using Basic Concepts language and the six mediation steps, demonstrate letter formation, and use hands-on activities to support learners' understanding.
Teacher Comments
The teachers were overwhelmingly positive about the Letter session, describing it as educational, informative, enjoyable and fruitful, with particular appreciation for the clear demonstrations and the practical value of the Basic Concepts approach in improving their teaching and supporting learners who struggle. Several teachers also highlighted the programme's relevance to CAPS and its value in developing both teachers' and learners' skills.
